Home Security for Kids

Most of the time, kids tend to depend on adults to stay safe. Now, although this is how things should be, adults aren't always there to watch their kids grow up, though. Because of this, it would be vital to teach your kids what to do in case emergencies arise and how to avoid panicking if danger ensues.

Think about it: can you really plan every single thing in your child's life? Well, just by going through certain scenarios with them, you can at least give them enough confidence to know how to handle things as needed. Here are several basic home security tips that every kid should know in order to stay safe:

1. Lock every door and window properly.

Show your kids how they should lock every door and window in the house and make sure that they know that these locks shouldn't be unlocked even if they are in the house to keep watch. They also need to learn how to turn on the home security system and how to turn it off in case the alarm goes off by mistake. Make sure your kids know the secret code to the security system, as well, so they can help the people at the monitoring company turn off the alarm in case a false alarm occurs.

2. Know who to call.

Teach your kids who to call and when they should call them. Explain what each important phone number is for and make sure they know that they should only be used for real emergencies and when real dangers are occurring. Ideally, your kids should memorize your address and phone number, as well, so they can give it to the operator as needed.

3. Never let strangers into the house.

Talk to your kids about the different techniques that people use nowadays to get inside a house, like pretending to be a cop or telling them that they need to call somebody because of an emergency. Some kids also slip up and tell strangers that nobody else is home, thus resulting in very dangerous situations. Make sure your kid isn't one of them.

That aside, you should also tell your kids never to share their personal information with anybody, including their name, address and phone number. Your kids have to know that there are people out there who might try to harm them with that information if they get access to it.

Naturally, you also have to make sure that you don't scare your kids too much as you try to teach them about home security and personal security, in general. However, you do want to ensure that they are prepared for the worst, in case those times come.

Remember: having an actual plan of action can help them assess each situation as calmly as possible and get out of it as needed. Times are different now and the world is definitely much more different now, so make sure you take the steps needed to keep your children safe at all times.
